Holiday Helper 2016
This year, our Holiday Helper Program matched 315 families with a sponsor and provided gifts to 798 children! Our 122 Holiday “Helpers” included many individuals as well as companies whose employees were matched with individual families. Our partners included BGI, BNY Mellon, Thayer Academy, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Fidelity, Loomis Sayles, Aquanor, Merrill Lynch, Citizens Bank, Radius Bank, Brown Advisory, Bank of America, South Boston Mom’s Club, Danielle & Paul Carter and friends and the staff here at SBNH. We delivered 50 Christmas dinners donated by the L Street Running Club to local families and were able to furnish a home for a young family who recently moved out of a shelter into a completely empty apartment. This outpouring of generosity made a real difference for our families – turning what can be a very sad and stressful time for many into one of joy and celebration. We are humbled and grateful for the compassionate people who made all this possible!
On December 6th, the SBNH Board of Directors held its annual meeting. In addition to board business, the Ollie board and staff recognized Matt Derorsiers from Compass on the Bay for his generous support of our Senior Program, including the donation of a handicapped accessible van and a wide screen HD TV. Thank you for all you do, Matt!
John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Team
SBNH has been a part of Hancock’s Marathon fundraising program since 2005 and during that time the members of our Marathon Teams have raised over $670,000 to benefit the Ollie. More than half of that figure – $380,000 – was raised by our runners in the past four years alone! This year’s Team Ollie – Corinne Cunningham, Luke Prendergast, Leighanne Thomsen, Kelsey Wallace and Team Captain Emeritus, SBNH Board member Bob Boyda- are hard at work training and fundraising under the guidance and wild energy of our team manager, Susan Hurley of Charity Teams! Check out Team Ollie and join us at Capo on Friday, 2/10, for a Team fundraiser. Lend your support to the strongest runners of all – the ones who run for others!
As part of the annual Board meeting on December 6th, the board and staff recognized Mary Walsh, our Family Engagement Specialist, for her years of service at the Ollie. Happy retirement, Mary!
The House Is Where The Heart Is
Save The Date! This year’s annual benefit reception and auction will take place Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Harborview Ballroom in the Seaport World Trade Center. We are excited to debut two community awards – The Amy K. Murray ‘Angel’ Award and the Joe “Dodo” Nee ‘Champion’ Award. Arthur Murray, Amy’s dad, has agreed to accept the first ‘Angel’ Award for his generous and enthusiastic support of all things Ollie and the Nee Family has graciously agreed to accept the ‘Champion’ Award for the many, many years they so unselfishly shared their beloved husband, brother, dad and papa with the South Boston community. It promises to be a grand celebration, so mark your calendars!
On Sunday, January 8th, The Cronin Group sponsored a New Year’s luncheon for South Boston seniors at our main ‘House’, 136 H Street. Forty-five local seniors braved the snowy streets on a bright sunny day to enjoy a fabulous spread prepared and served by the great crew from The Cronin Group’s restaurant division. Carole Sullivan, SBNH Senior Advocate & Program Director, outdid herself with decorations, centerpieces and a holiday playlist. Thanks again to The Cronin Group for a great day!
